How to Convert a 36V Golf Cart to 48V: What's Involved

By TIGON Golf Carts Team

Can You Convert a 36V Golf Cart to 48V?

Yes — and many owners do it to breathe new life into older Club Car DS, E-Z-GO TXT, and Yamaha G-series carts. But a 36V-to-48V conversion is more involved than simply swapping batteries. Here's what's actually required.

What a 36V to 48V Conversion Requires

1. New batteries (required)

Replace six 6V batteries with six 8V batteries (same quantity, same tray). The pack voltage goes from 36V to 48V.

2. New motor controller (required)

Your existing 36V controller is rated for 36V input. Running 48V through it will damage or destroy it. A 48V-compatible controller is non-negotiable.

3. New charger (required)

A 36V charger cannot charge a 48V pack — it will undercharge and leave batteries at 75% capacity. You need a 48V charger matched to your battery chemistry (lead-acid or lithium).

4. Possible motor upgrade (situation-dependent)

Many older 36V motors can handle 48V input, especially if you're not pushing to maximum RPM. However, for maximum performance and longevity, a 48V-rated motor is the better long-term choice.

5. Accessories review

Lights, horn, and any 36V-powered accessories may need regulators or replacement if they're not voltage-compatible.

Typical Conversion Cost

ItemApproximate Cost
6 × 8V batteries$600–$900
48V controller$250–$600
48V charger$150–$350
Motor (if needed)$300–$600
Labor$150–$300
Total$1,450–$2,750

Is It Worth It vs. Buying Used 48V?

At $1,500–$2,750, the conversion cost is comparable to buying a decent used 48V cart. The conversion makes sense if you already love your specific cart (custom lifted, restored bodywork, sentimental value) or if the cart body is in outstanding condition. For a plain older cart, buying a used 48V is often the smarter financial move.
