South Carolina Golf Cart Laws
South Carolina §56-2-105 through §56-2-150 govern golf cart operation:
Class I Golf Carts: May operate on secondary roads posted 35 mph or less if the county has permitted golf cart use. Must display a permit ($5 county fee in most counties).
Class II Golf Carts (Street Legal): Full LSV standard — title, registration with SCDMV, liability insurance, all federal safety equipment. May operate on roads up to 35 mph.
No age requirement for operating on private property or designated cart paths.
South Carolina's Golf Cart Hotspots
Hilton Head Island (29928): Arguably the most cart-friendly community in the country. Hilton Head has an extensive private cart path network through its gated plantation communities. Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard — all have golf cart lanes.
Myrtle Beach / Grand Strand: Horry County has approved golf cart use on many designated roads. The Grand Strand's 60-mile stretch of communities has significant cart traffic in residential areas.
Kiawah Island (29455): One of the country's premier resort islands — private cart paths throughout the resort.
Pawleys Island (29585): Barrier island community with longstanding golf cart tradition.
Orangeburg County: Our home turf. Orangeburg County and surrounding communities (Bamberg, Calhoun, Colleton counties) have growing golf cart adoption in residential and golf course contexts.
