6-Volt vs 8-Volt Golf Cart Batteries: The Key Difference
Both 6-volt and 8-volt batteries power golf carts through the same basic principle — wire multiple batteries in series and the voltages add up. But the two configurations produce different total voltages and serve different system requirements.
How Each Configuration Works
| Configuration | Batteries | Each | Total Voltage | System |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 batteries × 6V | 6 | 6V | 36V | Older/legacy carts |
| 6 batteries × 8V | 6 | 8V | 48V | Modern standard carts |
Both setups use the same number of batteries (six) and fit in the same-sized battery tray on most carts — which is exactly why owners confuse them. The only reliable way to tell them apart is to read the voltage label on each individual battery.
Physical Differences
6-volt and 8-volt batteries are similar in physical size but not identical:
- 6V batteries are typically slightly taller and have more plate area per cell (3 cells at ~2V each)
- 8V batteries are slightly shorter in height but fit the same tray footprint (4 cells at ~2V each)
- Case color and labeling vary by brand — always read the label, never guess by color or size
Capacity and Range
| Battery | Typical Capacity | Range per Charge (pair) |
|---|---|---|
| 6V (e.g., Trojan T-105) | 225 Ah | Good for 36V system |
| 8V (e.g., Trojan T-875) | 170 Ah | Good for 48V system |
8-volt batteries have lower individual amp-hour capacity but deliver higher voltage, resulting in similar or better total energy storage per pack. A 48V 8V-pack system typically outperforms a 36V 6V-pack system in total range.
Which Batteries Does Your Cart Use?
- Older Club Car DS (pre-2001), E-Z-GO TXT (pre-2010), Yamaha G-series: Usually 6V batteries → 36V system
- Club Car Precedent/Tempo, E-Z-GO RXV, Yamaha Drive (post-2010): Usually 8V batteries → 48V system
- Denago, Evolution, ICON: Usually 8V batteries → 48V system
