Golf Cart Registration Guide

Do You Need to Register a Golf Cart?

For private property use only: Registration is generally not required in any state. A golf cart used entirely on private land (your farm, a campground's private roads, a golf course) does not need to be registered.

For public road use (LSV/NEV): Registration is required in all states. The cart must also have a federally assigned VIN (17-digit), be a certified LSV/NEV, have liability insurance, and the driver must have a valid driver's license.

The Registration Process for LSV/NEV

  • Obtain the title from the dealer (for new carts) or seller (for used)
  • Get liability insurance from a licensed insurer in your state
  • Visit your state DMV/BMV with: title, proof of insurance, and payment
  • Complete the registration application — same process as any motor vehicle
  • Receive license plates — affix to rear of cart
  • Display registration card — keep in cart's glove box or dashboard area
  • Required Documents for Registration

    VIN Requirement: The Critical Pre-Check

Only certified LSV/NEV golf carts have federally assigned VINs (17-digit). Standard recreational carts do not have VINs and cannot be registered for road use. Verify your cart has a VIN before attempting registration.

TIGON's LSV models (DENAGO CITY, Evolution D5 Maverick) come with factory-assigned VINs and all required registration paperwork.
