How Many Batteries Are in a Golf Cart?

Golf carts use between 4 and 8 batteries depending on the voltage system and battery configuration. The number alone doesn't tell you the total voltage — you also need to know each battery's individual voltage rating. This guide covers every common configuration.

The Short Answer: Battery Count by Voltage System

Total Voltage# of BatteriesEach BatteryWired
36V6 batteries6V eachSeries
48V6 batteries8V eachSeries
48V4 batteries12V eachSeries
72V6 batteries12V eachSeries
48V or 72V1 packLithium (single unit)N/A

Key rule: All batteries in a golf cart pack are wired in series — positive terminal of one to negative terminal of the next — so voltages add up. Four 12V batteries in series = 48V total.

36-Volt Configuration: 6 × 6V

The classic 36V setup uses six 6-volt deep-cycle lead-acid batteries. This configuration was standard in older Club Car DS, early E-Z-GO TXT, and Yamaha G-series carts built through the late 1990s and early 2000s.

  • Total batteries: 6
  • Each battery: 6 volts
  • Combined: 6 × 6V = 36V
  • Weight: Approximately 200–240 lbs for the full pack
  • Common brands: Trojan T-105, Duracell GC2, Interstate

48-Volt Configuration 1: 6 × 8V (Most Common New Cart Setup)

Most modern electric golf carts — including Club Car Precedent/Tempo, E-Z-GO RXV and later TXT models, Denago, and Evolution Carrier models — use six 8-volt batteries.

  • Total batteries: 6
  • Each battery: 8 volts
  • Combined: 6 × 8V = 48V
  • Weight: Approximately 260–300 lbs for the full pack
  • Common brands: Trojan T-875, US Battery 8V, Deka

This is why you can't assume 6 batteries = 36V. Always check the individual battery label.

48-Volt Configuration 2: 4 × 12V

Some utility and value-tier golf carts use four 12-volt batteries to achieve 48V total. This is common in certain Yamaha, ICON, and some Columbia models.

  • Total batteries: 4
  • Each battery: 12 volts
  • Combined: 4 × 12V = 48V
  • Weight: Approximately 220–260 lbs
  • Common brands: Interstate, Optima, Universal Power Group

72-Volt Configuration: 6 × 12V

Street-legal LSV carts like the DENAGO City, Evolution D5 Maverick LSV, Swift EV, and Tara EV Spirit Plus typically use six 12-volt batteries for 72V total.

  • Total batteries: 6
  • Each battery: 12 volts
  • Combined: 6 × 12V = 72V
  • Weight: Approximately 300–360 lbs

Lithium Packs: Single Unit Replacement

Lithium (LiFePO₄) upgrades replace multiple individual batteries with one or two compact lithium modules. A 48V lithium kit typically comes as a single drop-in pack that replaces all 4–6 lead-acid batteries.

  • Typically 1–2 physical units
  • Equivalent to 6 × 8V (48V) or 6 × 12V (72V)
  • Weight savings of 150–220 lbs vs. lead-acid
  • Includes a built-in BMS (Battery Management System)

How to Identify Your Configuration

  • Open the battery compartment
  • Count the physical batteries
  • Read the voltage printed on each battery label
  • Multiply: count × individual voltage = system voltage
