South Carolina Golf Cart Laws
South Carolina has a statewide golf cart permit system that allows registered golf carts on roads posted 35 mph or less. The SC DMV golf cart permit program requires:
- Proof of ownership (title or bill of sale)
- Valid SC driver's license
- Liability insurance (minimum $50,000/$100,000)
- Golf cart permit from the SC DMV ($5 annual fee)
- Cart must have reflectors, horn, and a slow-moving vehicle emblem
Once permitted, your golf cart is legal on designated streets in Orangeburg, Columbia, Sumter, and across the state. For full unrestricted road use, a factory-certified Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) with a VIN is the best option.
