Golf Carts in Pennsylvania: Your Complete Guide
Pennsylvania is a state of contrasts — dense suburbs outside Philadelphia, mountain resort communities in the Poconos, and sprawling rural landscapes throughout. Golf carts thrive in all of them. TIGON Golf Carts has three physical Pennsylvania stores to serve the state, plus the Pocono Pines service area served from Long Pond: Hatfield, Long Pond, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Pennsylvania Golf Cart Laws
Pennsylvania does not have a statewide street-legal golf cart law as permissive as some other states. However, golf carts can operate legally in several contexts:
On Private Property: No state registration required. Golf courses, campgrounds, private communities, and large properties freely use golf carts.
As LSV on Public Roads: Pennsylvania recognizes Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) under state vehicle code. Requirements include:
- Maximum speed: 25 mph
- Electric or gas powered
- Must be titled and registered through PennDOT
- All federal LSV safety equipment required (lights, mirrors, belts, windshield)
- Valid PA driver's license required
- Liability insurance required
Municipal/Community Exceptions: Some Pennsylvania municipalities and boroughs have adopted local ordinances permitting golf cart use on low-speed local roads. Check with your township or borough.
